How to use the free After Effects downgrader
Select your .aep project in the tool above. It reads the project header, offers older supported versions and creates a separately named copy. No account, payment or project upload is required. The original file stays unchanged.
- Keep a backup of the complete project folder.
- Select an AEP file saved by After Effects 2022–2025 (22.x–25.x).
- Choose an older target: After Effects 2022, 2023 or 2024, depending on the detected source.
- Read the compatibility note and create the copy.
- Download it, open it in the target release and compare a short render with the original.
This experimental AEP project downgrader changes the major-version marker in a recognized binary project header. It does not translate newer effects, expressions, renderers or other project structures. A downloadable copy is not proof that After Effects can open or render it correctly. Application compatibility has not yet been validated on Olaf Motion sample projects.
How to save an After Effects project for an older version
When you have a newer After Effects installation that opens the project, start with Adobe’s built-in workflow. Choose File > Save As > Save a Copy As [previous major version], then open that copy in the target release. If the required version is not offered, an intermediate release may be needed.
Adobe warns that newer features may be ignored in a copy saved for an earlier release. Keep the master project and a reference render. See Adobe’s project documentation for the supported save options.

Renaming .aep to .aepx does not convert a binary project into XML. A project author can export XML through File > Save As > Save a Copy As XML. XML is an interchange format, not a guarantee of backward compatibility.

Why a downgraded After Effects project may still fail
An older application may reject newer project structures even after the version marker changes. It may also open the file with missing features. Check plugins, fonts, expressions, 3D settings and color management before editing.
- Open the downloaded copy in the exact target release and read all warnings.
- Relink footage and install compatible versions of the required fonts and plugins.
- Inspect expression errors and the most complex compositions.
- Compare key frames and a short test render with the original preview.
- If the copy fails, return to the original and use Adobe’s save-back workflow or request help from its author.
A project file points to media on disk. Downgrading it does not collect missing footage or convert unsupported codecs.

Yes. The local tool is free, requires no account and accepts AEP files up to 25 MB. It creates experimental compatibility copies for supported headers.
Can I downgrade an AEP file without After Effects?
You can create an experimental header-patched copy here without installing After Effects. You still need the target application to confirm that the project opens and renders correctly.
Are my project files uploaded?
No. The tool reads and modifies your project in this browser tab. It does not send the project, its filename or its contents to a conversion server.
Can this tool convert AEPX or After Effects 2026 projects?
No. This implementation accepts recognized binary AEP headers from After Effects 22.x–25.x. For XML projects or other releases, use a compatible After Effects installation and Adobe’s save-back workflow.
Will effects and plugins survive the downgrade?
Only features and plugins available in the older release can work there. The local tool does not translate newer features, so preserve the original and compare a test render.
