Method 1: Save a Copy As for an Earlier Version
If your After Effects release offers a backward-save option, open the project and look under File > Save As for Save a Copy As or a similarly named option. Choose an available earlier version, save a separate copy, then open it in the target application and check it. Keep the original project unchanged. Newer features or effects may not be available or may behave differently in the older releas

Method 2: Save Through an Intermediate Version
If the target release is not directly available, you may be able to open and save the project through intermediate After Effects versions. Check the file at each step rather than assuming the conversion will work. This approach can take extra time, and features unsupported by an earlier release may be changed, unavailable, or lost.

Method 3: Try an XML Project Copy
If the direct backward-save option is unavailable, check whether your release offers Save a Copy As XML or another .aepx export option. Save a separate XML copy, try opening it in the target version, and, if it opens, save it there as a native project. XML is not a universal compatibility fix, so inspect the project carefully for missing or altered data.

Check Version and Asset Compatibility
Before handoff, confirm the recipient’s exact After Effects version and check for third-party plugins, effects introduced in newer releases, expressions, fonts, and footage paths. When appropriate, gather project media with the application’s Collect Files option, then verify that the recipient can access the collected assets. The After Effects template compatibility guide offers more context for c

Choose an Editable Project or a Render
If the recipient only needs to review or publish the finished animation, a rendered video may be more practical than an editable .aep file. If they need to change timing, replace content, or continue animating, they will likely need the project and its required assets. For template-based editing, see the After Effects templates guide and clarify what the recipient expects to edit.

When to Ask About Project Handoff Support
A large version gap, several third-party plugins, or expression-heavy animation can make a manual handoff more involved. If you’re unsure whether the recipient needs an editable project or a render, share the current and target versions and describe the intended use when you contact Olafmotion about your project. A rendered deliverable may still be the simpler option.
